Dance with Haluan + PDT
Haluan + PDT. 34 + 35. Two of Bayanihan’s dance aspects have come together to create a collaborative dance workshop event. The first half will be happening tonight at 7 pm! Curious about what to expect?
As the name suggests, attendees will be dancing to “34 + 35” by Ariana Grande. Tonight’s portion will be led by Haluan coordinators Geno Belantes, Genesis Castaneda, and Rianne Daria. Next Friday’s portion of the event will be led by PDT coordinator Kai Linis. Haluan is the hip-hop dance troupe housed under Bayanihan and PDT - or Pagkakaisa Dance Troupe - is the traditional Filipino dance troupe housed under Bayanihan. The fusion of these two styles of dance will make for fun and inventive choreography to a popular modern song. The combination of different sounds and styles in the song was something that the coordinators wanted to embody with the event and is reflected in the choreography.
Typically, some of the performing aspects get together to perform at Unity, a show that invites other ethnic organizations to perform and showcase their culture. Due to the virtual format of this year, however, a big Unity showcase was not possible. Instead, the Haluan and PDT coordinators opted for the “34 + 35” workshop series to take its place. The idea took root last quarter and the coordinators have since spent weeks planning this event, meeting weekly to discuss their progress. “Time flew by fast, but we’re really looking forward to the event” said Genesis.
With all the hard work they have put into planning this event, the coordinators hope that everyone who attends simply has fun. Their intentions to expose folks to different styles of dance is something that they hope people will take away from the event, and they anticipate people leaving the series having learned something new. Having been physically separated for such a long time, they have been excited to collaborate with and learn from each other again. But perhaps what they are most looking forward to is sharing their choreography with others and watching the event come to life.
