Fall Reception and Week 4 Events
The day was Thursday, October 21st. The time was 7:30 pm. The location was Zoom. The event? Fall Reception.
As the clock struck 7:30 folks began piling into the Zoom meeting. Over 50 people attended last week’s Fall Reception, an event that provided community members with the opportunity to learn more about Bayanihan’s aspects and this year’s aspect coordinators. As more people entered the space, chatter and excitement began to grow. Seeing all these faces - new and familiar - only elevated the anticipation.
The first half of the event was dedicated to aspect “speed dating”. Each aspect had their own breakout room, and folks could choose which one to spend five minutes of their time with before moving on to another aspect’s breakout room. In those five minutes, the coordinators introduced themselves, talked about their aspect, and chatted with the attendees. During this time folks could also ask questions and get a feel for the aspect.
After three rounds of “speed dating”, it was time for the second half of the event. Dubbed “Bayan-dersnatch”, this portion was dedicated to providing the community with a space to destress and socialize. There were three breakout rooms, each one designated for a different activity. The first breakout room was for drawing - specifically drawing for the Alaytober prompts. The second breakout room was for music, and it allowed people to discuss anything music-related. The third breakout room was for gaming. By far the most popular choice, those who opted to join the gaming room hopped onto Discord to play Among Us. The main room was open for people to just chat about what was on their minds.
At just past 8:30, everyone was called back into the main room for announcements and closing. Opportunities to get involved - both in and outside of the Bayanihan space - were shared with the remaining attendees. When it came time for the Isang Bagsak, Ryan Loyola (one of this year’s Tech Crew coordinators) volunteered to lead it. Those who had the ability to unmute did so, and the heartbeat clap began. It increased in pace, building up until the big clap at the end. And with that, Fall Reception was over. The third community event of the year was a success! If you were able to attend, please let us know your thoughts on the event by filling out our feedback form. Thank you for attending!
As we head into this fourth week of the quarter, many aspects will be having their info nights. Check out this week’s newsletter for more information! In addition, SOMeCA will be having an event tomorrow, October 27th, at 7 pm, featuring alumni Tiffany Dena Loftin. She will be discussing ways we can continue to make an impact on the world, especially after the elections. If you’re interested in attending, RSVP at bit.ly/2IxrsVV (with an uppercase I, not a lowercase l)!
Speaking of elections, KAMP will be having a Ballot Guide Workshop this Thursday, October 29th, at 6:30. This workshop is intended to inform the community on how to research the candidates and measures/propositions that are on this year’s ballot to ensure that everyone feels confident in their voting decisions. RSVP here!
Once again, thank you to everyone who came out to Fall Reception! Have a great rest of the week!
